Introduction $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Congratulations! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ You have just won $1,000,000! There is just one small catch…you have to give it all away to charity. Who will you give to? Can you find an organization worthy of your money? Perhaps you will create your own. Good luck with your new fortune!
Task Your team will work together to investigate different charities online before deciding on one that you feel is worthy, or coming up with an idea of your own for a charity. You will then create an iMovie forthis charity which will show the good work of this charity, how they use the money donated to them and why you all agreed on this charity as a group.
Process Get into your groups and spend 5-10 minutes thinking of and discussing some charities you may have heard of.
Go to Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charitable_organization for the definition in the United States of a Charitable organization.
Take notes
Go to the Better Business Bureau http://www.bbb.org/us/charity/ to check on which charities are reputable.
Go to Charity Navigator http://www.charitynavigator.org/ for help with assessing a charity.
You may need to go back and forth between these 2 sites a few times before choosing a charity you can all agree on. You may either do this together, or you may each choose to do some research on one charity then compare them and decide as a group which is best.
When looking at charities, pay careful attention to how they spend their donations. For example: What percentage goes towards program costs (the good works that they are doing) versus administrative costs (paying people to work there, bills, etc.)? Also pay attention to their mission and whetheryou agree with it, and how easily they make information available to the public.
Decide, as a group, on a charity to represent.
If you cannot find a charity you can all get behind, you may come up with an idea for a charity of your own.
After deciding on a charitable organization, you will create an iMovie for it.
Your iMovie should include information on: what the charity's mission is, why you think this charity's mission is important, where and how they receive donations, how responsible they are with the money donated to them and where your $1,000,000 will go, how readily they make information available and anything else you find interesting or unexpected about this charity.
Please also include some graphic elements, such as pictures and/or charts. Remember to work as a group, manage your time and have fun deciding where to donate your $1,000,000! This iMovie should only be about 1 minute in length. Conclusion Now that you have researched charities you should have a good understanding of how they work and how they spend their funds. You should now know how to collect and process data and report results and be able to use those results to make an informed decision. https://sites.google.com/site/charityresearchwebquest/home
