Introduction
You will be taking a two week trip around the state of Maine. You will need to plan the trip so that you get to know northern, central and southern Maine. You will be expected to 'map out' your trip complete with distance to drive each day. Since you will be absent from school, you will be expected to present your trip to the class upon your return. Your teacher expects to hear about famous people, historical events and places, products and geographical details from all areas of Maine. You will be expected to explain why it is worth any family's time to spend their vacation in their own state of Maine.
The Task
The Process
The Research:
Complete the following activities using the Outline Map. You will need to print 3 copies to complete three different map activities and include a legend and title for each map.
1. Map Activity:
Map A. Identify counties of Maine. Use the Kid's Page - Maine Counties to help you with this activity. Be sure to label the County and the County Seat.
Map B. Identify geographic areas (Regions) of Maine and their influence on the economy (Vacationland). Use the Visit Maine and Maine's Regional Guide to help you with this activity.
2. Geography Activity:
Print out and complete this activity from Enchanted Learning.
3. Product Activity:
Complete and hand in for correction the Product research aid and/or the Product Crossword Puzzle. Be sure you are aware of what season and where the product is available. Use the Maine's Products and Lumbering link to help you.
Plan the Trip
Now that you have done all this research you should have a pretty good idea of where you would like to go in Maine. Plan your trip keeping in mind the season you have chosen to take your vacation in, where every member of team wants to go, and be sure to include the state capital, historical visits, and you must visit all 16 counties. Make sure that your trip "makes sense". You don't want to be traveling from Portland to Bangor then back to Freeport. Use your maps and plan a logical vacation. Present your trip in a Slide show form.
Conclusion
It is my hope that through your online research and what you have learned in the classroom will give you a better understanding of the wonderful state that you live in.
